I have a soft hard spot for guys who like to show off a bit, especially those who have nice arms and shoulders and know how to casually flex to draw attention to those attributes without coming off as a wannabee bodybuilder. Nice biceps and shoulders make me think about slow dancing, kissing, and…

So after peeking at a few of the solo photo galleries, I found myself quietly warning the boys on my screen if you keep showing off like that, you’re gonna get me all wet and I won’t be responsible for anything that happens…

FreshmanX is a new site with a fast-growing library of original and exclusive content featuring guys who run between appealing to magnetic in the age bracket of 20 to about 25, with builds ranging from defined to buff. Most are nicely manscaped and grooming is typically mainstreet

Although there are some recognizable faces at FreshmanX, you will also find a lot of newbies. The ethnic balance seems to be about 60% North American meat and 40% European.

Loved and Hated:

• Loved: Big crisp images and videos.
• Loved: Downloadable content - each video page and photo gallery have download links.
• Hated: Stupid “arriving soon” panel doesn’t say when.

Metrics

Quantity: FreshmanX has approximately 96 videos and 96 photo galleries online as of this writing; every episode has both video and images. As of this writing, the site is updated 6 times per week (6 new videos and 6 new photo galleries).

Video Quality: The media is sublime, obviously recorded with high end equipment. Streams are offered in Windows Media format for download, in a 640 x 480 size @ approximately 2,700 kps. There is also a handy FlashPlayer scheme for online viewing and preview purposes. The video pages are nicely designed, as this screenshot shows.

Image Quality: FreshmanX offers images which are up to 1,500 px wide or tall, with the option to choose from 3 resolutions. The images are from digital still cameras. As this screenshot shows, photosets are available as downloadble compressed folders.

User Experience: FreshmanX is sweet, a simple, elegant site consisting of a main page (see this screenshot) and nicely organized pages for the video library (see this screenshot), the photoset library (see this screenshot), and the current stable of models (see this screenshot). It’s basic, intuitive and fast.

I tend to review sites from a sensory viewpoint, with immediacy in mind.

How does the site hit me? What impresses me most? What do I find attractive, and what repels me?

In the case of FreshmanX I find I’m very impressed at first glance.

Why?

Smiling faces and eyes looking at me. This will draw me in any time. The guys don’t even have to be devastatingly cute if they are at least looking at me and smiling.

On the front page of FreshmanX I see lots of cute guys, and they all seem to be interested in me. I know I’m just a viewer, but if I feel connected to the scene in some small way I’m very happy.

As pagemonkey mentions under User Experience, FreshmanX is simple and elegant - like a nicely composed portrait, were I to compare it to something in my field of experience.

I don’t like clutter. I want to be able to find what I want quickly. What do I want? I want to find the guys, and I don’t want to play “Where’s Waldo” to find them.

That is why I like what FreshmanX has done with their site. They offer on the front page a series of new updates, and their menu system is very simple. Just links for MOVIES, PHOTOSETS, MODELS, and CONTACT US. I like that.

In particular I like the Models Directory concept they employ to catalog their guys. Nice large snapshots of each model, everyone one of them is looking right at me. They are all reasonably cute, and they do offer a variety of guys, although that variety isn’t as wide as I’d like - but more about that later.

They certainly do nice technical work at FreshmanX. The quality of their photos is top notch, and their videos are equally superb. They use great camera angles, and the lighting and all that goes into the production is first rate. The only thing I’m a little confused by is who is actually doing the filming and production. The 2257 blurb at the beginning of their videos mentions Michigan. But, in the interviews they talk about Orlando. It really doesn’t matter that the lawyers and accountants are separate from the studio, I guess.

In many of the solo scenes they do a short interview with the model, which I really like, but in others there is no audio at all. In all cases though, the videos load very quickly and play flawlessly. Navigation from photo to photo is likewise very seamless.

The action videos are extremely good, albeit somewhat tame, and in all the action videos I watched there is no real interaction with the camera. They just get right to business. This is disappointing because I will always welcome some kind of interview beforehand. Again, the technical quality of the videos are excellent as well. The editing seems flawless, and the camera, although hand held, is not herky jerky like in some videos.

Two caveats and I’ll close.

• Missed : Spontaneity, for which I have a certain fondness.
• Missed: Ethnic variety. Almost all the FreshmanX guys are white.

With those small exceptions, I have to say I’m very pleased with FreshmanX. They serve up magnetic, memorable guys who are photographed with competence and sophistication, and then presented in a way that is uncluttered and direct.
