Review - Watchmen (Warner, R)

Review: Watchman (Warner, R)

Pat and I saw WATCHMEN over the weekend. We don’t often to the theater to see movies because we have a great TV at home and a Blu-Ray
DVD player and that makes watching movies at home very enjoyable.
However, when a film comes out that we really want to see we’ll make an evening of going to the theater and enjoying dinner out somewhere as well. We’ve both wanted to see WATCHMEN since we first heard it was coming out, mostly because we’ve liked director Zach Snyder since we saw 300, and we dig sci-fi and fantasy in films.
We sure weren’t disappointed. We both agree that this is one of the best films of its genre to come out in a long time. It’s got a deep enough plot with enough twists and turns and enough complexity that we can watch it several more times and not get bored. We particularly like the fact that it’s NOT a kids movie in any way, shape, or form. It’s strictly for adults only, and that appeals to us.

The acting is really first rate, the cinematography is simply beautiful, and the pacing is fast and crazy. It does have a great deal of violence, and that doesn’t typically appeal to me. But, it’s intrinsic to the plot, and for some reason it only rarely feels gratuitous.
The story involves an alternate history, and it is set in 1985. The WATCHMEN are a set of vigilante “super-heroes” who have a long and convoluted history together. We like the fact that none of them are purely good or purely evil. They are all complex characters and bring a great deal of depth to the story.
The main cast consists of Malin Akerman, Patrick Wilson, Jackie Earle Haley, and Billy Crudup. They all do really bang up jobs. Billy Crudup is particularly good as Dr. Manhattan, and it’s really cool that there is lots of full frontal nudity showing his very impressive cock. Of course, his character is a bright blue glowing superman, so his big long glowing dick fits the bill.
The action is fast paced and very strange. There is much that goes on that I’m sure escaped me during the first viewing. But, that just makes me want to see it again and again.
If you like good sci-fi fantasy with great special effects and a great plot with excellent acting, go see this move. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.
